I was born in Athens, Greece in 1968. I finished the Athens College high
school in Athens (Salutatorian of my class). I received my
MD degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki,
Greece and my PhD degree from the Democritus University of
Thrace, Greece. I completed my residency in Internal
Medicine and my fellowship in Nephrology in Thessaloniki,
Greece. I was also trained in Peritoneal Dialysis at the
Toronto Western Hospital, University of Toronto, Canada,
under Dr D.G. Oreopoulos (June 2002 - January 2003) and in
glomerular diseases at the Glomerular Center, Medical
School, Columbia University, NY, USA under Dr G. Appel
(January 2009 - April 2009).
Starting June 2017, I completed a one-year sabbatical leave
in the
Clinic of
Nephrology and Hypertension, Diabetes and Endocrinology,
Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany
under Prof. P. R Mertens.
I served for 6 years as a lecturer and later as an Assistant
Professor of Nephrology in the Department of Nephrology,
Medical School, University of Thessaly in Larissa, Greece
and later as a Lecturer, Assistant and Associate Professor
of Nephrology
at the
Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, in the 1st
Department of Internal Medicine, AHEPA Hospital, Medical
School, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece
I am currently a Full Professor of Nephrology and head of the 2nd
Department of Nephrology, AHEPA Hospital, Medical School,
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece with clinical and
educational responsibilities for both undergraduate and
postgraduate students. The
Department has a Dialysis Unit with 20 beds, a PD unit with 6
beds (50 patients), a plasmapheresis unit and a clinical
Nephrology section where around 15 patients are treated in a
daily basis. We are also running daily Nephrology (CKD,
Glomerular Disease) and Hypertension Clinics for out-patients.
I am serving as member of the editorial board of
several reputed journals like Clinical Nephrology,
International Journal of Molecular Sciences, Nutrients and
International Urology and Nephrology (section editor for
Hemodialysis) and as an Associate Editor for Frontiers in
Physiology (renal and Epithelial Physiology). I have served as
a reviewer for over 70 well reputed journals, including all
major nephrology journals (Kidney International, JASN, AJKD,
CJASN, NDT, etc).
I am a member of the International Society of
Nephrology, ERA-EDTA, International Society for Peritoneal
Dialysis, International Society of Hemodialysis, American
Society of Nephrology, American Society for Nutrition, Greek
Society of Nephrology. I have been also a member of the Young
Nephrologists Committee (2009-2016) and the Publications
Committee of the International Society of Nephrology.
Currently I serve as Vice Chair representing ISN (and elected
chair starting April 2023) of the World Kidney Day Steering
Committee, member of the ISN Western Europe Regional Board and
since 2020 a member of the Board of EUDIAL (European Dialysis
Working Group of the ERA-EDTA).
I was or
currently am actively involved in many Committees of the
Medical School of our University (PhD Committee, MSc
Committee, Bioethics Committee, Educational Committee etc) and
in the Administration Committee (RESTART) of the Aristotle
University of Thessaloniki. I am also the Vice-Chairman of the
Research Ethics Committee of the University of Peloponnese,
Greece, serving as an external member.
I am also actively involved in the Greek Society of
Nephrology (former member of the administrative council and
the educational committee).
I also had a significant administrative experience as a vice
president of the board of directors of the "Papafeion"
Institute of Thessaloniki, which is a public centre for
juvenile care.
I currently serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the
“Theageneion” Anti-Cancer Hospital.
My work has been presented in over 430 abstracts in
national and international conferences and
I have authored or co-authored over 500 full scientific papers
as
well as a number of chapters in international Nephrology books
(e.g. Nolph and Gokal's Textbook of Peritoneal Dialysis etc).
The total impact factor of my publications is 2448.260, the H-index=47
and my work has been cited >8500 times (Google Scholar
database). I have also given over 100 invited lectures
nationally and internationally and served as chairman in many
sessions in national and international conferences (including
ERA-EDTA, WCN etc).
I have supervised two PhD Theses that were awarded an A grade with Suma
Cum Laude, and I am currently supervising other 3 PhD
students. I have also been or currently am a member of the
supervising Committee of 17 PhD
students and over 100 MSc Students.
Since 2019
I have founded two 12-months Clinical fellowship programs in
my department (in Peritoneal Dialysis the “D.G Oreopoulos
fellowship” and Hemodialysis).
I have participated in many multicentre international studies, and I have
served as a P.I. in 14 clinical trials. I have attracted many
grants (over 600,00 Euros) from national and international
organizations. I have received several scientific awards and
scholarships (including the Scholarship of the Greek Society
of Nephrology in 2002 for training in Peritoneal Dialysis in
the Toronto Western Hospital and 8 awards for scientific
achievements from the Medical School of the Aristotle
University of Thessaloniki in the years 2014, 2015, 2016,
2017, 2018, and 2019. I was also recognized as being among the
top 1% of reviewers by the Publons Organization. I have also
been awarded the distinction “Fellow of the International
Society of Nephrology - FISN”.
